Unlike other Xfadering’s interviews, where we “push” the artists to answer 10 questions, we’ve made a few ones in orders to hear about the evolution of Simon Delacroix aka The Toxic Avenger. But, from the musical and personal stanpoints, what thnigs have let hime to change, produce his albums…
We’ve read about your American tour in tour 2007 sharing stage with the likes of Skrillex / Franki Chan, a good boost thanks The Bloody Beetroots… How would you describe those early years in the radar?
Basically I was just a young guy in his bedroom that was doing songs just for fun and suddenly I toured the whole world .. I lived in LA… it was SO insane ! Rolling Stone mag US making an article about me, playing with the artists I love etcetc … and all of that in less than 6 months !
Specially in the us ..it was so new for everyone ! They found out about indie dance music at this time and they were over-excited!
You composed the 1st and the 2nd album in 2010 and 2013 respectively. From where did you take the inspiration to write those albums and routines working?
Most of my inspiration come from landscapes and différent countries I can cross… it’s really inspiring…
I need to escape to write… So I did my first album in Morocco… the 2nd one in the south of france
And it’s also something I like to do because I can’t take all my gear with me so I have to go to the essence of my music…
Let’s focus on 2016 and your new LP “Ξ” (Roy Music): What makes it different from the first two?
Basically… this time i did everything i didn’t do the last two times !
I made it mostly at home in paris, and what was inspiring was not landscapes, but the year 2015 globally … i had a personnal tough year, and i had to expiate everything by doing this 3rd album..
Alone ! There’s almost nobosy expect me on this album if i didn’t count the voice of my wife on ” pas sur la bouche “, On the last two albums there was plenty of featuring .. on this on i’m all by myself so it’s 100% me.
I slowed down the tempo as well ..
“Ξ”, a LP consisting of 12 great tracks. We would like to read, don’t be hesitating in words, everything you want to tell us about the concept, ideas and impulse (good and not so good), And, if you could define your favourite songs with a few words… We really appreciate it!
As i told you i had to expiate an awful year 2015…i lost few of my family members ..and As all the parisians 2015 was tough … so i guess my album is quite dark.
If you want to pronounce it , it’s called “Xi” it’s a greek letter. Greece ans thessaloniki in particular is a city where i feel great. Where i got great memories from my childhood to now, so i had to pay them ah hommage
My favorite song on this record i guess is ” close ” . It’s a really simple song but yet powerful and melancolic, at least i hope so ! And that’s exactly what i tried to do, a deep deep deep song, still powerful even if it’s not agressive or speed . I also love Tear you apart .. that i conceive just as an hommage to early house, like marshall jefferson or inner city.
This Friday TTA is back visiting Razzmatazz… what can you tell our readers in Barcelona about it? DJing right? Are you planning to do a live tour with the new album?
Yep Djing ! Come see me ! it’ll be awesome i’m sure!!! i love Razz!! and the loft @ razz even more!
I’ll come for live shows in 2016 for sure !!! Specially in spain, it’s always so cool!
I’m arriving friday in the morning , so if you see me on the streets of barcelona, come say hi!!!
And last but not least importantly. Tell us please Simon about some particular story (anecdote) you had during your career performing and/or travelling around the world.
One that i love : i was playing SXSW in Austin, a regular dj set, when i saw agitations on the crew, something was going on… i checked, and just in front of me was … bill murray, shaking his head to my djset, as if everything was normal, for like … 20 min, and then he just simply left the venue!
Thank you very much! Don’t forget to order his new album:
